BrushPath
Terms of use
Last updated 5 November 2026 · Privacy policy
The short version. BrushPath is a learning tool, not a qualification. Plus renews until you cancel it in Google Play or the App Store, and what you have learned stays yours whether or not you keep paying. Stroke and dictionary data belong to their authors; words you add are yours. We may change the service and will say so in the app.
Who we are and what these terms cover
BrushPath is made by Colon Slash (colonslash.app). These terms apply to the BrushPath app on Android and iOS and to BrushPath Plus. By using the app you agree to them. Our privacy policy explains what the app does with data.
What BrushPath is
BrushPath helps you learn to write Chinese characters from memory. It checks your strokes, schedules reviews and keeps a record of how you wrote. It is a study aid: it does not award qualifications, and we do not promise any particular result in an exam or anywhere else. Grades and schedules are produced automatically from your writing and can be wrong now and then.
Using the app
You may install and use BrushPath on devices you own or control, for your own learning. You may not copy, sell, rent or redistribute the app, take it apart to extract its content or data beyond what the licences below allow, or use it in a way that breaks the law or harms other people.
Free and Plus
Learning your first 300 words, reviews of every word you have learned, practice, your decks, adding and importing words and the Cantonese bridge are free. BrushPath Plus is a subscription that keeps new words coming past 300 and adds the features marked Plus in the app.
- Prices are shown in the app and charged by Google Play or the App Store, under their terms. We never see your payment details.
- Plus renews automatically at the end of each period until you cancel. Cancel in Google Play or the App Store, not in the app; cancelling stops the next renewal and keeps Plus until the current period ends.
- If a free trial is offered, it turns into a paid subscription unless you cancel before it ends. The app tells you before that happens.
- Refunds follow Google Play's and the App Store's policies. Where the law gives you a right to cancel a purchase, nothing here takes it away.
- If Plus ends, nothing you learned is taken away: every word you have learned keeps coming back for review, free, for as long as you use the app.
Your words and decks
Words, decks and lists you add or import are yours. They stay on your phone, and you are responsible for having the right to use anything you import. Exports and backups are files you make and keep; we hold no copy.
Content and licences
BrushPath's own code, design, text, drawings and the ink bird Mo are © Colon Slash. The learning content comes from these sources, under their own licences, which are credited in the app under About:
- Character stroke data: Make Me a Hanzi and hanzi-writer-data, under the Arphic Public Licence; rendered with Hanzi Writer (MIT).
- HSK 3.0 word and character lists via mteh (CC BY-SA 4.0).
- Readings and meanings: CC-CEDICT (CC BY-SA 4.0); character parts from chinese-lexicon (ISC).
- Cantonese: CC-Canto (CC BY-SA) and rime-cantonese (CC BY 4.0).
- Mandarin audio generated with Google Cloud Text-to-Speech.
- Fonts: Shippori Mincho, Newsreader, Instrument Sans and Noto Sans (SIL Open Font Licence).
Changes and availability
We may change, add or remove features, and we will say so in the app when a change affects you. Downloadable content depends on services run by other people (GitHub, jsDelivr, the app stores), so it may not always be available. The core of the app works offline.
Liability
BrushPath is provided as it is. To the extent the law allows, we are not liable for losses that come from using it or being unable to use it. Nothing in these terms limits rights you have as a consumer that cannot be limited by agreement, including your rights under the Consumer Rights Act 2015 if you are in the United Kingdom.
Law
These terms are governed by the law of England and Wales. If you live elsewhere, you also keep the protection of the consumer law where you live, and you may bring a claim in your own courts.
